“ 小説の起源は神話とゴシップにある。この二つの原理から小説は逃れることができない。 　だから二十世紀の最も優れた二人の小説家はそれぞれにこの二つの起源に戻って、『ユリシーズ』と『失われた時を求めて』を書いた。ジョイスは神話から出発し、プルーストはゴシップから出発して、この二つの概念を徹底的に拡大解釈し、ふくらませ、雄大な作品に仕立てあげた。小説家としては一種の開き直りだったかもしれない。 　では神話とゴシップはどういう関係にあるか？神話とは神々と英雄たちに関するゴシップ。また、ゴシップとは最も卑俗な神話。つまり、実は両者はお互いごく近くに位置しているのだ。並行する支流であり、下れば共に小説という本流に至る。
